Autumn 2009 - eNews, tips and more

   Reasons to Smile!

1. Introducing the VELscope!
Early detection of pre-cancerous tissue can significantly increase survival rates as well as decrease the problems associated with the cancers. Oral cancer is no exception!

Your oral exam at our office has always included a visual inspection of your mouth’s soft tissue. Today’s technology allows us to see deeper under your skin before problems even reach the surface.

To increase the probability of early detection, our office has added the VELscope Oral Cancer Screening System.

You can read more about VELscope in the article below.

2. Protect Your Winning Smile
With many indoor sporting leagues gearing up in the upcoming months remember to speak to us about protecting your teeth. A properly fitted mouthguard will add a level of safety that over the counter alternatives may not provide.

You can read more about mouthguards in this month's tip.

3. Wine, Cheese and Your Teeth!
In this issue we are going to examine why we pair up wine and cheese together and how this may affect our teeth! Read more here.

Fifth Annual Holiday Food Drive
Our office will be holding our Fifth Annual Holiday Food Drive from December 1 to December 23, 2009. All donations are greatly appreciated and will be given to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Wishing you healthy mouths and great smiles!

Warmly,
Dana and Team

A VELscope is an early cancer detection device, used in combination with traditional oral cancer examination procedures. The VELsope allows the health care professional to visualize mucosa (tissue inside the mouth) abnormalities. By detecting pre-cancerous lesions early, the VELscope may save thousands of lives, and aggressive treatment modalities later.

Cancer of the mouth is more common than stomach, brain, ovarian and cervical cancers. It is also more common in ...You can continue reading here.

  Protect Your Winning Smile

Mouthguards are flexible dental appliances worn by athletes to protect teeth from possible damage. They are usually made of plastic materials that fit comfortably over your teeth and gums.

There are over the counter variations available, but for the highest level of protection we recommend a custom fitted mouthguard that is made specifically for your smile. The make we chose based on your specific needs has a kevlar protection bar behind the front teeth to help sustain any trauma. Various colours are available for the unique bite plate!

   Wine, Cheese and Your Teeth!

Let's examine why we pair up wine and cheese together and how this may affect our teeth!

The tradition of enjoying different cheeses for dessert, or in combination with drinking wine, might have a beneficial effect on preventing dental erosion since cheeses contain calcium in a high concentration.

This helps neutralize and boost the remineralizing power of saliva to halt the acid attack.

Eating strawberries while sipping on your wine or mixing sparkling whites with fruit juice to make a 'fizz' may spell trouble ... Continue reading here.
