Dear Friends:
Gratitude. An acquaintance sent me a Thanksgiving card with a picture of a pumpkin patch on it, and on the inside the greeting read, “Gratitude is a great attitude”. I was incredibly touched by this truth. It sparked many conversations over the weekend. Gratitude holds us in the present, and keeps me rooted in my thankfulness for family, friendship and nature. For me gratitude is an innate feeling of well-being. Research has shown that gratefulness is directly related to a healthier life. Writing our thoughts in a journal, or speaking them out loud, rather than just thinking them, intensifies our feelings and experiences. Over time gratitude can become a lifestyle that eases our life’s journey.
It can lead to a gentler and more beautiful opportunity, which can help us deal with the injustice, discomfort and stress that occurs in our daily lives.
This year I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to take my two children (who are young adults; however, our children will always be our children) to Paris. I was amazed at the warmth of the Parisians. We had such an amazing time together. From visits to the Louvre and the Tulleries, cooking classes in Montmartre, segwaying through Paris at night, and biking to Versailles, we created a most memorable trip. I learned that the Mona Lisa did not smile, as showing one’s teeth in the 16th century was considered vulgar, due to their decay and brown appearance. How times have changed. Today we are proud of our smiles. Imagine having to be closed mouthed so that we can hide our teeth. When I was in Paris, I marveled that such a varied and wonderful world exists, only a seven-hour plane ride away.
Once again this has been a busy year of learning. Five of us went to Atlanta to attend the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s Annual Convention. Shortly thereafter, I followed through with an intensive weekend course in Minneapolis, at the American College of Sleep Medicine. I truly believe that quality of sleep is as important as diet and exercise. It is the time for our bodies and minds to rest and heal. I am presently doing a study with Youthdale, a sleep centre for children, to assess the effect of tonsils on the quality of sleep in children and teens.
In October, six team members went to Park City, Utah to study exceptional practices. That same month, I returned to the Pankey Institute in Florida for an extensive hands-on course called “Natural Smile Designs”, with the world famous Magnon brothers, Pascal and Michel. I was very inspired by their artistry and tooth conservation techniques. I feel blessed to have had this opportunity to learn more, as I strive to create more beautiful and natural looking smiles, and a healthier mouth. When I mention that I am going to take a course, I am often asked if I will be teaching the course. Yes, even in dentistry, advances occur so quickly that change is inevitable, and growth is optional. My continuing education keeps me up-to-date, inspired and passionate about dentistry.
At the office we continue to follow the quest for better health and wellness. An eco carpet was laid recently with no glues or adhesive. We strive to use cleaning products that are environmentally friendly.
Amelia Deliakis, one of our associates, has left to take over an existing practice on her own. Drs. Bernie, Urusa and I are sad that Amelia will no longer be with us; however, we are also very happy for her to take on this new, exciting opportunity. Amelia will always be a close friend, and we wish her all the best.
We welcome Dr. Dale Nixon, and are grateful to have him with us in the practice. Dale is a wonderful person with 30 years of experience as a dentist. Prior to coming here to 1950 Yonge Street, he practiced in British Columbia and Australia. Dale and I have traveled parallel roads in our personal and professional development. All of our patients who have met him enjoy him as a person, and recognize his exceptional dental skills. Dr. Bernie Gryfe dedicates many days to continuing education, with special interest in implants and cosmetic dentistry, always learning more & expanding his wonderful skills. With courses scheduled at the esteemed Pankey Institute in Florida, Dr. Ansari has a busy year of continuing education to look forward to.
The life cycle continues within our team. Jenny and her family welcomed their third child, Adam, this past summer. Sadly, both Sandra and Karen lost their fathers to cancer. Our condolences to both of them and their families. Margaret has returned to school part-time, upgrading her skills to become an expanded duties hygienist, and Dejana is back in our practice as a dental hygienist. We welcome Adriana and Natasha as dental assistants. We wish to thank Anjoli for being part of our team while Margaret is in school. Nick is now with us as our onsite dental technician.
Our ten-year+ club includes Stevka, Sharon, Terri, Karen, Caron, Sandy, Ljiljana and Lana. Rosemary and I have achieved twenty-five years of working together. I am honoured to be able to work with such an amazing group of talented individuals.
Of course, my days would not be such a great source of joy without such amazing people who join us every day at the practice. You enrich our lives by sharing your life experiences and your friendship with us. Our life’s skill is dentistry; however, our daily interactions with the special people who visit us are what make our professional life so worthwhile. We are grateful to you for being part of our extended family.
With love, Dana & Team
